Depression Therapist in Tampa, FL
Depression is a complex, diverse illness, with different antecedent causes and manifestations. However, a remarkable theory for depression has emerged from recent studies. This theory shows that depression occurs when genetics, environment or stress causes a lack of nerve cell growth in the brain. In the non depressed brain, circuits of nerve cells send signals to regulate mood. A brain hub then integrates these signals and relays them to the more conscious parts of the brain, thereby allowing us to register our own moods or act on them.
In the depressed brain, nerve death disrupts these signals and they are registered consciously as sadness, grief, and anxiety. Often, depression is emotional pain without context. When neural growth malfunctions, emotional pain is generated and amplified out of context. Depression results in an internalized, biased self-talk theme that is on auto pilot, like a computer program running negativity without provocation.
Effective therapy engages the patient such that the brain begins to grow nerve cells. By becoming more active and engaged in new problem solving, the conscious parts of the brain opens up parallel pathways of nerve-cell growth.
Neuron growth produces the changes in mood and the alteration of behavior. The goal for treating depression is to move from a static-state to a dynamic-process. We grow sorrowful, but we can grow joyful. Imprinted in our brain is an instinct for curiosity and seeking that shows that happiness is a not a fixed mindset, instead it is a flowing and active process.
There are, undeniably, many ways to influence the growth of happiness, but mindfulness is a great place to begin.
Mindfulness meditation is a practice that helps you learn to regulate where your mind goes without judgment. The practice allows you to successfully engage at a deep emotional level without linking emotions to negative judgments. Through this practice you identify underlying patterns of emotions-and-cognitions. Insights you learn in mindfulness training will be used to see what is happening in your life and your relationships.
